What is AI?
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, which is a type of technology that can be trained to think and learn on its own. AI is like a computer that can learn from its mistakes and get better over time, much like humans. AI is used in so many places these days. You’ve probably used it in one way or another…
Some examples of how AI can help us in everyday life:
- Personal virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa help us with everyday tasks like setting reminders, suggesting recipes, or predicting the weather
- Music streaming platforms, like Spotify or Apple Music can suggest playlists or artists based on your listening history
- Online retailers can suggest products to us, based on the things we’ve bought previously
- Using your face to unlock your phone
What information does AI pull from in Bumble For Friends for the icebreaker feature?
AI only uses the life and interest badges you selected, age, gender, name, and city (e.g., London), to create relevant conversation starters for the matched members. The name of the question recipient is shared to use as a salutation, but not for generating questions. The above details are taken from their public profile information, which other members using Bumble For Friends would see, too. No special category data, such as religion or political affiliations, is shared with AI or used for conversation starter questions.
Why are you using AI?
We know from speaking with members like you that it can be tricky to know what to say to start a conversation with a new friend. So, we wanted to suggest some icebreakers to help you get chatting more easily. To make them relevant, we need to make sure they’re personalized to you. That’s a lot of information and potential combinations of profiles that could connect. AI can handle this level of detail in a matter of seconds. Using AI to help us, allows us to spend more time focusing on some other great features that we hope will help you connect. The icebreaker feature is only offered once to start the first conversation with a matched member. While AI can give you a helping hand, you’re in full control and can choose not to use AI to generate a question by pressing ‘X’ when the icebreaker feature pops up or edit the message completely before you send it. If you do not want others to use the icebreaker feature to start conversations with you, please contact us here.
What is your lawful basis for using AI for the icebreaker feature?
We rely on our legitimate interests to provide the icebreaker feature to members to facilitate networking opportunities on Bumble For Friends. Please see what you need to do if you do not want to use the icebreaker prompts or allow other people to use them with you below.
Do you use a third party to generate the conversation starters?
Yes, we are using OpenAI Ireland Limited (OpenAI). OpenAI is the only service provider that receives your personal data we listed above in relation to the icebreaker feature. It cannot use any data we share for training its AI models and can only do what we ask with the data. It deletes the data it receives within 30 days of receipt.
Where can I find information of how Bumble For Friends uses my data?
Everything you need to know about how we use your personal data to offer Bumble For Friends is included in our Privacy Policy.
