Coming up with the perfect convo starter can be hard sometimes! That’s why we’ve created icebreakers, which use artificial intelligence (AI) to help you come up with a message.
How do AI-powered icebreakers work?
- When you connect with a new person on Bumble For Friends, head to your chat screen. Here, if no one has sent the first message yet, you’ll see an icebreaker button above the text box. This feature is only shown to you once to start a conversation.

- A friendly chat sidekick will pop up. Information on what data of matched members we share with the AI tool is provided in detail in the FAQs. So, please read this before continuing.
- In summary, the only data shared with AI tool will be your and your connection’s life and interest badges you selected, age, gender, name, and city (e.g., London), to create relevant conversation starters for the matched members. The name of the question recipient is shared to use as a salutation. The above details are taken from public profile information that other members using Bumble For Friends would see, too. There are no special category data, such as religion or political affiliations, that are shared with the AI tool or used for conversation starter questions.
- If you do not wish to use the feature, you can click on the ‘X’ button on the top right-hand corner of the pop-up or just start typing your own question, and the feature will disappear.
- If you choose to use the feature, the AI technology will generate up to three different conversation starters. You’ll be shown one potential icebreaker question first; from there, you can tap either “Use this question” or “Next question” to see another option.
- You can shuffle through the three prompts, and once you’ve decided which one you like the best, tap “Use this question” to add it to the text box on your chat screen. Don’t worry! You’ll have the chance to edit the question in any way you like before you hit send.
- If you’re not feeling any of the potential messages you’re being shown, you can exit the feature at any time by tapping on “Cancel” at the bottom of the screen
